Two young newlyweds, João Pedro Prudêncio Cardoso (19) and Maynara França Schio (18), have died in a tragic collision with a suspected drunk driver on the PA-160 highway in Parauapebas, northern Brazil. The accident, which occurred around 1 a.m. on Sunday, took the lives of the couple just weeks after they were married.
The pair were riding a Yamaha MT-03 motorbike when they collided with a black Ford Ecosport driven by 36-year-old Dyonatha Chaves Oliveira. According to local reports, Oliveira was allegedly over the legal drink-driving limit at the time of the crash. The teen couple sadly lost their lives at the roadside.
Tragedy for Recently Married Couple
The incident is particularly devastating as João and Maynara had only recently tied the knot on August 28, making their d.eaths a profound tragedy for their families and community.
Following the crash, the suspect, Dyonatha Chaves Oliveira, was taken to the hospital for treatment before being transferred into custody. He has since been charged with manslaughter aggravated by drunkenness.
Suspect Granted Bail
During a court appearance the following day, prosecutors pushed for the suspect to be held in preventive detention due to the severity of the charge and his alleged intoxication. However, the defense successfully argued that Oliveira was a first-time offender with a fixed residence and a job contract.
Ultimately, Judge Juliana Lima Souto Augusto decided to set bail at £2,090 (BRL 15,000). As conditions of his release, the suspect’s driver’s license was seized, he is required to appear in court every month, and he is prohibited from leaving the district without prior judicial permission.
The police investigation into the fatal incident and the circumstances surrounding the young couple’s d.eaths remains ongoing.
