The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has strongly reaffirmed its commitment to the fight against illegal gold mining popularly known as galamsey with the donation of Ghc 5 million and five Toyota Hilux pickups to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
GoldBod made the donation
during a brief ceremony held in Accra on Monday, September 15.
The donation is intended to strengthen the operations of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Secretariat, which coordinates efforts to curb the destructive practice.
According to the GoldBod, the donation forms part
of its broader commitment to improving gold traceability and promoting sustainable, responsible mining practices across the country.
In a statement at the ceremony to receive the donation, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, thanked GoldBod for the gesture and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to intensifying the clampdown on illegal mining.
According to him, the Ministry is working with the Attorney General’s office to fast-track the prosecution of offenders, and is also engaging the Ministry of Transport on measures to regulate the movement of excavators used in illegal mining operations.
