The Independent Electoral Commission (EC) of Uganda has confirmed that at least 11 presidential aspirants have have so far successfully returned supporter endorsement forms pending Electoral Commission verification and vetting, a key requirement ahead of next year’s general elections.

Addressing the press in Kampala yesterday, Mr. Julius Mucunguzi, the EC spokesperson, said the aspirants had submitted the constitutional prerequisite of gathering signatures from at least two-thirds of Uganda’s districts, pending verification by EC as stipulated by electoral law.

“The law requires each presidential aspirant to be endorsed by at least a proposer and seconder from two-thirds of the districts. Each registered voter is permitted to endorse only one aspirant. As of September 10th, 2025, eleven aspirants had submitted their forms to the Commission,” Mucunguzi said.

Political Parties in the Race

Of the 11 aspirants, five are sponsored by political parties:

National Unity Platform (NUP)

Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC)

Uganda Patriotic Movement (UPM)

Conservative Party (CP)

Common Man’s Party (CMP)

The rest are independents who secured the endorsements of registered voters across the country. More aspirants are expected to return forms including but not limited to the perennial ruling National Resistance Movement Organisation (NRMO)

A Crowded Contest Narrowing Down

Earlier in the electoral roadmap, more than 200 Ugandans picked nomination forms to seek endorsements, but the latest figures, despite the fact that more shall be received, show a significant narrowing down of serious contenders.

The EC spokesperson noted that the Commission will now scrutinize the submitted forms to verify authenticity and ensure compliance.

Nomination Dates Confirmed

The EC has maintained that presidential nominations will take place on September 23rd and 24th, 2025 at the Commission’s headquarters in Kampala. Only those who have successfully passed the endorsement verification exercise will proceed to the nomination stage.

The coming weeks are expected to intensify political activity as aspirants finalize preparations to formally enter the 2026 presidential race.
