By Art Koroma, a Sierra Leonean Poet and author
As I strolled through the neighbourhood, basking in the warmth of the sun and the kindness of my neighbours, I couldn’t help but reflect on the journey that had brought me back here. Just a few months ago, I was living in Europe, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of European life. But something within me yearned for a change, a chance to reconnect with my roots and rediscover the vibrant culture of my childhood home. My journey began when I arrived at the Freetown International Airport, Lungi, where the warm Sierra Leonean sun greeted me like an old friend. From there, I made my way to Lokomasama, my beloved hometown that I had missed so dearly over the years.
As I settled back into my childhood home, I was struck by the peace and harmony that permeated the air. The gentle rustle of leaves, the sweet songs of Birds, and the soft whispers of the wind all blended together to create a sense of serenity that I had not experienced in a long time. As I explored my old surroundings, I rediscovered the natural beauty of Lokomasama. The lush green forests, the sparkling streams, and the vibrant wildlife all captivated my senses and filled my heart with wonder. I spent my days immersing myself in the rhythms of village life, relearning about the local customs and traditions, and reconnecting with the people around me. The weather had been a pleasant surprise – despite the rainy season, the sun had been shining brightly, casting a warm glow over the village. It was as if the heavens had conspired to welcome me back home.
It was moments like these, surrounded by the warmth and hospitality of my neighbours, that made me realize how much I had missed this place. Pa-Foray’s skilled hands had not only given me a stylish “Thonlo” haircut but had also connected me to a part of myself I thought I had left behind. Momodu Kamara’s vibrant garden and Brima’s warm smile were reminders that community and connection were just as important as the hustle and bustle of city life. As I walked, the scent of jollof rice wafted through the air, transporting me to memories of family gatherings and celebrations. The sound of laughter and music filled the streets, and I felt a sense of belonging, of being part of something bigger than myself.
Africa, with all its complexities and contradictions, had welcomed me back with open arms, and I was grateful for the chance to experience its beauty and warmth once again. In this moment, I felt a deep connection to the land, to the people, and to the culture. The Thonlo haircut, once just a simple trim, had become a symbol of my homecoming, a reminder of the beauty of reconnection and the power of community. As I continued my stroll, I knew that I was exactly where I was meant to be – in Lokomasama, surrounded by the people and the place I love. My heart was full, and I was grateful to be home…
