Nigeria’s Super Falcons Stage Dramatic Comeback to Win 10th WAFCON Title Against Morocco

In a breathtaking final at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria’s Super Falcons overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2, securing their record-extending 10th title. Morocco appeared poised to claim their first WAFCON trophy after a commanding first half, with captain Ghizlane Chebbak scoring a powerful long-range goal in the 13th minute and Sanaâ Mssoudy adding a clinical finish in the 24th minute following a dynamic run, thrilling the home crowd.

The Super Falcons emerged from the halftime break with renewed vigor. A pivotal moment arrived in the 63rd minute when a controversial penalty was awarded after the ball hit Nesryne El Chad’s arm. Esther Okoronkwo confidently converted the spot-kick, reigniting Nigeria’s hopes. The momentum swung in their favor, and in the 71st minute, Okoronkwo provided a precise low cross for Folashade Ijamilusi to tap in the equalizer.

Morocco had a chance to regain the lead in the 79th minute with a penalty for a handball, but a prolonged VAR review overturned the call, sparking outrage among the home supporters and fueling debate over the officiating. Nigeria capitalized on the shift, with Jennifer Echegini sealing the victory in the 88th minute by nudging in a deep free-kick, completing a remarkable comeback.

Despite Morocco’s valiant campaign, highlighted by a dramatic semifinal penalty shootout victory over Ghana, they fell just short. Nigeria’s path to the final included a hard-fought 2-1 semifinal win against defending champions South Africa. The match, attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF President Patrice Motsepe, underscored the rising global prominence of African women’s football.

Nigeria’s victory earned them a record $1 million prize, part of a 45% increase in the tournament’s prize pool by CAF. While Morocco’s loss stings, their impressive tournament run earned widespread admiration. For Nigeria, the “Mission X” campaign culminated in a 10th WAFCON title, reaffirming their dominance in African women’s football.
