At least 20 people have died after a Bangladesh Air Force plane crashed into a college in the capital, Dhaka on Monday, the country’s military has said.
According to the army, the crash which happened at Milestone School and College campus, in the Diabari neighborhood, left 171 others injured.
The army says majority of those injured are students who are being treated in hospitals in the capital.
The BAC F7 jet crashed into the two-story campus around 1:18 p.m. local time when students were attending classes.
According to Bangladesh state media BSS News, the plane crashed after a mechanical fault.
The military noted that the plane’s pilot made “every effort to divert the aircraft away from densely populated areas toward a more sparsely inhabitated location.”
A reported by the Associated Press citing regional officials said the pilot was among those killed in the crash.
