The Telecel Ghana Foundation has donated 100 new laptops to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi to support underprivileged students under the university’s ‘Support One Needy Student with One Laptop (SONSOL)’ initiative. This marks the second donation, following 200 laptops provided in 2021 in response to KNUST’s appeal to address digital learning challenges.
The donation aligns with the Foundation’s Connected Learning pillar, aimed at bridging the digital divide for underserved communities through access to digital tools and training. Telecel Ghana CEO and KNUST alumna, Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, led the delegation, stating, “We believe this donation will bridge the digital gap and promote inclusion in the university. With these laptops, more students will now be able to participate fully in virtual learning, collaborate on projects, and take control of their academic future.”
KNUST’s SONSOL initiative, spearheaded by Vice-Chancellor Professor Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson, seeks to equip over 3,000 needy students with laptops to overcome barriers to virtual learning due to limited ICT resources. Accepting the donation, Professor Dickson expressed gratitude, noting, “Thank you for this investment; we have come this far as a university because of your connectivity and support. This donation will go a long way to unearth the potential of these gifted, talented and transformational leaders who are from deprived backgrounds. It will have a multiplier effect even beyond the hundred beneficiaries.”
KNUST SRC Vice President Samuel Afful highlighted the donation’s impact, saying, “Many students from deprived backgrounds go through a lot of struggles just to get access to a laptop for their studies, which sometimes leads to device problems. These laptops will truly light up the lives of so many students and ease their burden.”
The presentation occurred during Telecel Ghana’s Ashanti Month, a June celebration honoring the company’s strong ties and partnerships in the Ashanti Region.
