Former Assistant Secretary at the Office of former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, Ibrahim Adjei, has issued a stern warning to Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, cautioning against the abuse of state power in targeting prominent members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on May 26, Adjei emphasized that political power is transient and must be exercised within the confines of the law and in the public interest. “The NDC administration must be mindful that this power, as far as you may wish for it, is not everlasting,” he said, urging the ruling party to respect the democratic underpinnings of the country.
Adjei’s caution follows recent arrests and investigations of NPP figures, including youth activist Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi, and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. Kumi was arrested last Friday by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and charged with publishing false news after making unsubstantiated claims on social media and in a radio interview. He was later released after high-level discussions involving security officials and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
In a related development, Chairman Wontumi faced a failed arrest attempt by a joint team of National Security and police officers at his residence last Friday, May 23. The reason behind the operation remains unclear, but NPP supporters converged on his home in protest, condemning the show of force. Wontumi has since assured that he will honor the invitation to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Key Points:
Abuse of Power: Ibrahim Adjei cautions NDC against abusing state power in targeting NPP members.
Recent Arrests: Adenta Kumi and Chairman Wontumi are among NPP figures facing investigations and arrests.
Democracy Under Threat: Adjei emphasizes the need to respect democratic principles and the rule of law.
Upcoming CID Appearance: Chairman Wontumi to appear before CID amid unclear circumstances.
Adjei’s comments underscore the growing tensions between the ruling NDC and the opposition NPP, with both parties navigating the complexities of Ghana’s democratic landscape. As the situation unfolds, Ghanaians will be watching closely to see how the NDC administration responds to Adjei’s caution and whether the rule of law is upheld.
