The South African Under-20 menβs national team, Amajita, have claimed their first-ever Africa U20 Cup of Nations title after a hard-fought 1β0 victory over Morocco at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo on Sunday night.
Midfielder Gomolemo Kekana scored the decisive goal in the second half, capitalizing on a defensive error after a long goal-kick from goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe. A Moroccan defender misjudged the clearance, allowing Kekana to pounce and unleash a powerful shot into the roof of the net.
The goal was initially flagged for offside, but after a VAR review, it was allowed to stand, sparking wild celebrations from the Amajita squad and their supporters.
The win marks a historic moment for South African football, as Amajita clinched the U20 AFCON trophy for the first time. Their previous best finish in the tournament was a runner-up position 28 years ago.

Head coach Raymond Mdaka guided the team to the title after they qualified for the tournament as COSAFA champions. With this triumph, Amajita will now head to the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile this September as the reigning African champions.
The result is a significant boost for South African football, offering a promising platform for the Under-23 Olympic team and the senior Bafana Bafana squad. Attention will now turn to ensuring proper support and preparation for the players ahead of global competitions.
With South African teams continuing to thrive on North African soil, eyes are also on the Mamelodi Sundowns, who are chasing continental glory in the CAF Champions League final. They will face Egyptβs Pyramids FC in a two-legged clash, with the first leg set for Loftus Versfeld and the return fixture back in Cairo.
South African fans will be hoping for another victory in Egypt, reminiscent of Sundowns’ 2016 CAF Champions League triumph against Zamalek.
