A major counterfeiting operation was uncovered in Sarpeiman, a suburb in Ghana’s Greater Accra Region, with official Bank of Ghana cash boxes at its center. The incident raises alarming concerns about possible regulatory failures and the robustness of Ghana’s financial security systems.
Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, Richard Jakpa, confirmed the authenticity of the money boxes recovered from the scene. “Authorities have verified that these boxes are genuine,” he disclosed, sparking questions about how state-sanctioned financial assets ended up in the hands of a covert criminal network.
The operation, disguised as a modest battery-charging shop run by an elderly man known as the “Battery Doctor,” was producing massive amounts of counterfeit currency and fake gold bars. A raid led to the seizure of ten 40-foot containers filled with forged Ghana cedis, US dollar notes, and gold-plated metals. Investigators believe two more containers were moved shortly before the raid.
Key Players:
– Alhaji: Suspected mastermind behind the operation, with solid evidence connecting him to the crime scene and potential ties to a broader financial crime network. “Alhaji is a central figure in this syndicate, and efforts are underway to bring him to justice,” Mr. Jakpa stated.
– *The “Battery Doctor”*: Elderly man operating the front shop, believed to be a cover for the real activities.
*Investigation Status:*
The National Security Secretariat is working to bring Alhaji to justice and unravel the extent of the counterfeiting operation. The incident highlights the need for enhanced regulatory measures to prevent similar incidents in the future ¹.
