Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has confirmed that he authorized the arrest of former Board Chairman of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) of Ghana, Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi. This move is linked to an investigation into financial matters related to Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s tenure as Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructural Investment Fund (GIIF).

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was taken into custody by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on February 23, 2025. According to his lawyer, Ken Kuranchie, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi voluntarily accompanied the NIB officers to their head office and later to their Kawukudi offices in Accra.

When questioned about the arrest, Dr. Ayine stated, “Yes, I did.” He further revealed that Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi admitted to authorizing a $2 million payment for no work done. Dr. Ayine emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, saying, “We’re still investigating the circumstances of the payment and those who were involved”.

The arrest and investigation are part of a broader effort to address corruption and financial mismanagement in Ghana. Dr. Ayine’s confirmation of his role in ordering the arrest underscores the government’s commitment to holding individuals accountable for their actions.
