President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation into the National Service Authority (NSA) following the discovery of 81,885 suspected ghost names on its payroll. This directive comes after a headcount of active National Service personnel revealed significant discrepancies between the actual number of service personnel and the figures previously presented by the former NSA management .
The investigation, to be conducted by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), aims to uncover the extent of the corruption and ensure accountability. The discovery of ghost names has raised concerns over the scale of financial mismanagement within the Authority and the potential loss of millions of cedis in fraudulent payments.
In addition to the investigation, President Mahama has also directed the clearance of outstanding National Service Scheme allowance arrears. The Ministry of Finance has released GHS 226,019,224 to cover allowance arrears for 98,145 actual National Service personnel .
The new management of the NSA has been tasked with implementing urgent reforms to prevent the recurrence of ghost names on the payroll. These reforms are expected to introduce stringent verification processes and technological interventions to enhance transparency in the disbursement of allowances .
This development is the latest in a series of efforts to tackle corruption and ensure accountability in Ghana’s public sector.
