Electoral Commission Declares NDC’s Faustina Akurugu MP-Elect for Dome Kwabenya, Cancels Re-run

In a landmark decision, the Electoral Commission has confirmed Faustina Elikplim Akurugu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Dome Kwabenya constituency in the Greater Accra Region. The decision, announced on December 31, 2024, effectively cancels the planned re-run at one of the polling stations in the constituency.

The resolution followed an intensive review meeting by the Electoral Commission to address concerns surrounding the collation of results from the December 7, 2024, parliamentary elections.

According to James Zakaria Kofi, the Returning Officer for Dome Kwabenya, the finalized results show that Michael Aaron Yaw Oquaye Jnr. of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) garnered 50,669 votes, while Faustina Akurugu secured a narrow victory with 50,967 votes. Independent candidates Dora Nyako and Remy Parkour Edmerson received 220 and 302 votes respectively.

Out of a total of 102,782 votes cast, 102,158 were valid, with 624 ballots rejected. The declaration cements Akurugu’s victory by a slim margin of 298 votes, concluding weeks of electoral uncertainty.

Faustina Akurugu’s victory is a significant gain for the NDC in a traditionally competitive constituency.
