Omar Kibulanga, a talented journalist-turned-filmmaker, has made headlines by securing a significant award for his impactful short film “Makonde”. Kibulanga’s project was one of 11 outstanding pitches to receive $10,000 (Sh1.3 million) at the esteemed Some Fine Day Pix awards ceremony.

 

Kibulanga’s Inspiring Journey

 

Kibulanga’s film, “Makonde”, tells the poignant story of an orphan from the stateless Makonde tribe who battles systemic barriers to survive and save his ailing grandmother, highlighting his community’s struggle for citizenship, belonging, and access to basic needs. This powerful narrative has captured the attention of industry experts, earning Kibulanga his second win in as many months, following his success in the Alliance Française Sinema Mtaani Short Film Grant in October.

 

Empowering East African Filmmakers

 

Some Fine Day Pix, a pioneering platform, provides comprehensive training and financial support to East African filmmakers, empowering them to develop, pitch, and produce their unique stories. The recent awards ceremony celebrated the exceptional talent and innovation of 12 filmmakers, who impressed judges with their remarkable storytelling and business acumen.

1. 11 filmmakers received $10,000 (Sh1.3 million) each for their winning short film pitches.

2. Six teams were awarded funding to produce short films.t

3. Five teams were selected to focus on innovative strategies for film distribution, audience development, and maximizing social media impact.
