In recent years, several figures within Ghana’s music industry, from musicians to producers, have voiced concerns about the challenges holding back the sector’s growth. Many have pointed out the lack of financial resources, poor industry relations, and the need for better infrastructure as key obstacles. DJ Vyrusky, a well-known Ghanaian Disc Jockey and artist, is the latest to speak out, shedding light on what he believes is necessary for the industry to thrive.
During an interview on 3FM Drive on Monday, November 11, 2024, DJ Vyrusky shared his thoughts on why Ghana’s music industry continues to lag behind other countries like Nigeria. According to him, a lack of money and strong industry relationships are major reasons why the local music scene has struggled to gain global traction.
“I always like to call a spade a spade. We don’t have the money Nigerians have. They move differently because they have the power to move. You need money to move and we are not moving because we don’t have enough money, apart from that we don’t have enough relationships to move,” DJ Vyrusky stated.
He went on to explain that while Nigeria’s music industry has flourished, largely due to a robust network of relationships and financial backing, Ghana has not been able to establish similar connections. This, he believes, is holding back the country’s potential to grow and compete on a global scale.
In addition to the financial and relational barriers, DJ Vyrusky also discussed a cultural issue within Ghana, which he believes contributes to the industry’s stagnation. He highlighted what he described as an “ungrateful attitude” that some Ghanaians exhibit when they achieve success.
“There’s this thing about some Ghanaians, you push them to the higher places and when they get there, they forget that they are Ghanaians,” he said. “But when you have a Naija person in a space of authority, they make sure people know that there are Nigerians here and invite their people anytime there is opportunity.”
DJ Vyrusky’s comments reflect a broader concern within the industry about the need for a more united front and better support systems to foster growth. According to him, strengthening relationships and increasing financial investment are crucial steps for Ghana’s music industry to take the leap into global recognition.
