Police in Zanzibar have revealed the cause of death of popular American social media influencer, Ashlee Jenae.
Ashlee, a New Jersey native real name Ashly Robertson, died two months ago in a luxury hotel in Zanzibar.
She was pronounced dead aged 31 on April 9, 2026 after being found unconscious at the Zuri Zanzibar Resort.
Ashlee died hours after she was reportedly heard having a “volatile” fight with her 45-year-old crypto mogul lover, Joe McCann. She died six days after she and McCann got engaged during their safari.
A local media outlet in Tanzania, The Citizen Press, reported that authorities in Zanzibar have concluded their investigation into Ashlee’s death and found that she died by suicide as a result of mental distress.
Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations, Zuberu Chembera, told journalists at a press conference in Zanzibar on Thursday that “Through witness statements and analysis of communication devices belonging to the deceased and her fiancé, we established that she had been experiencing mental distress”, adding that “SMS exchanges showed repeated complaints regarding her life circumstances.”
According to him, the investigation “confirmed no individual was implicated in the death.”
A hospital in Zanzibar has since listed her cause of death as cerebral hypoxia by strangulation and suffocation.
