Idris Elba Honored as a Son of Ga Land in Accra

British actor and filmmaker Idris Elba has been officially honored as a son of Ga land during a grand ceremony at the Ga Mantse Palace in Accra. The event, led by King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, recognized Elba’s contributions to the African diaspora and his commitment to Ghana’s creative industry.

 

Justice Naa Yaale, Chief of Staff to the Ga Mantse and daughter of Ghanaian independence hero Ako Adjei, formally welcomed Elba, emphasizing the cultural significance of his visit. The ceremony was filled with traditional drumming, dancing, and vibrant displays of Ga heritage, celebrating the acclaimed actor’s deep connection to Ghana.

 

A Vision for Ghana’s Film Industry

During the event, Elba announced a major creative initiative:

“We have earmarked 22 acres of land beside Osu Castle for a fantastic studio and school that will serve our community in Accra.”

 

This project aims to train and empower young Ghanaian creatives while establishing Ghana as a leading hub for African cinema.

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II expressed full support for the initiative, highlighting its importance for Ghanaian youth:

“Our children lack direction, our youth lack direction, and we need these tools. Coming in to put up a studio and to partner with us is the way forward.”

The ceremony drew top figures from Ghana’s entertainment industry, including:
