Chinedu Uzoh, a newly signed player of Katsina United, is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Katsina General Hospital after collapsing during a pre-season friendly match on Tuesday.
Speaking to journalists, Katsina United’s media officer, Nasir Gibe, said the player was moved to the ICU at the request of his relatives, despite two hospitals reportedly declaring him dead following medical examinations.
According to Gibe, the player’s family insisted he was still alive even after a second hospital confirmed the initial report.
“The reports given from the medical examinations from both hospitals that we took him to. They confirmed to us that he is dead,” the club’s media officer said.
“But we don’t know where or who saw his hands shaking, which makes his relatives say he is still alive and that we should take him to the ICU.
“The ICU request is from the relatives, and we cannot deny them that right, even though the doctors have confirmed that he is dead.”
Gibe said the player is currently receiving oxygen in the ICU while his relatives continue to hold on to hope.
He, however, declined to provide further details on the medical circumstances surrounding the player’s collapse, noting that such information is only available to the club’s medical team.
The player previously featured for Kano Pillars FC before joining Katsina United ahead of the upcoming Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
