A Nigerian man, identified as Chika Ibe, has allegedly been tortured to death by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Ibe died during an operation in Cape Town, prompting calls for an independent investigation.
The incident is said to have occurred on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the Parksig Villas Complex in Bellville, Cape Town.
The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA), which disclosed the incident to Daily Trust, condemned what it described as the alleged killing of the Nigerian citizen and demanded that those responsible be held accountable.
According to the association, Ibe, a native of Lokpaukwu in Nigeria’s Abia State, allegedly died after he was severely beaten, tortured, subjected to inhumane treatment and reportedly suffocated during the police operation.
“These allegations are deeply disturbing and, if confirmed, constitute a gross violation of human rights and the rule of law,” Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, President of NICASA, said.
The association urged South Africa’s Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and the leadership of SAPS to launch a thorough, transparent and impartial probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Every officer found responsible must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There can be no justification for torture, excessive force, or the unlawful taking of human life.
“While we share the grief and outrage of the Nigerian community, we urge all Nigerians across South Africa to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding.
“We strongly discourage any form of retaliation or unlawful conduct and encourage everyone to allow justice to take its course through the appropriate legal channels,” the association said.
NICASA also pledged to engage with the Nigerian diplomatic missions in South Africa and the Federal Government of Nigeria to ensure the matter is pursued until justice is achieved.
“We will closely monitor the investigation and insist on transparency, accountability, and timely prosecution of all those responsible.”
