The Defence Minister of Djibouti, Hassan Omar Mohamed, has died while on a medical trip in France.
Djiboutian President, Ismail Omar Guelleh, announced the death of the Minister in a statement on Facebook, saying he died on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
President Guelleh says “With the passing of Hassan Omar Mohamed, our country loses one of its most loyal and talented public servants to promote the general interest.”
“He also instilled esteem through his continued commitment to founding his key commitments on principles and ethical values, and not on the basis of community affiliation,” President Guelleh also emphasized, praising “the virtues of a meritorious, experienced, and courageous partisan.”
According to the statement, as soon as the news of the death was announced, the President visited “the Paris hospital where the deceased Minister’s lifeless body was located to pay his respects and recite the fatiha for his soul so that Almighty God may grant him eternal Paradise.”
A prominent figure in Djiboutian public life, the late Hassan Omar Mohamed had long been a high-ranking official in the State, notably as Commissioner of Tadjourah and Secretary General of the Ministry of the Interior, before joining the Government about a decade earlier.
