Residents in South Africa’s northern KwaZulu-Natal have been urged to be on high alert after a lion was spotted near the R66 road between Nongoma and Pongola on Sunday night.

Ayanda Dube, the spokesperson of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, says the sighting is legitimate.

However, Dude said the lion did not escape from any of its protected reserves.

According to Dube, “Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife was made aware of a lion that was seen roaming on R66 around Nongoma and Phongola before the Vryheid turnoff. We can confirm that the sighting was real, however, we suspect that the lion escaped at Mkuze Falls Private Game Reserve. We appeal to members of the public to report any wild animal sightings to a nearest police station.”

Meanwhile, the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) has confirmed the capture of the second lion that was on the run outside Mbombela.

The lion was captured in the Barberton Valley, the Agency said.

The first lion was caught over two weeks ago at Uitkyk Road on the outskirts of Mbombela, the agency disclosed, saying it

relied on drone and helicopter services, among other methods, during this intensive search operation.

MTPA’s spokesperson, Simphiwe Shungube, expressed gratitude to all who assisted during the search.-Reporting by Gcinokuhle Malinga.
