France has asked its nationals in Mali to leave the country “as soon as possible.”
The advice comes after a weekend of deadly coordinated attacks by the Tuareg rebels and the al-Qaeda affiliate, Jama’t Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM).
The attacks which started on Saturday resulted in the death of Mali’s Defence Minister, General Sadio Camara, his wife and two grandchildren. They were killed at their military-base residence in Kati in an apparent suicide bombing by militants.
In an update issued on Wednesday, France also urged its nationals not to travel to Mali.
France described the situation in Mali as “extremely volatile.”
There have been reports of explosions and gunfire across Mali, including the capital Bamako.
