Over One Million Jobs Created,Lifting 950,000 Ghanaians Out of Poverty — Mahama Reports

President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana has recorded significant progress in employment and poverty reduction, with more than one million citizens securing jobs in 2025 and nearly 950,000 moving out of multidimensional poverty.

Speaking to the nation on Friday, February 27, the President referenced data from the Ghana Statistical Service, covering the period between the first and third quarters of 2025.

“Over one million Ghanaians have found employment between quarter one and quarter three of 2025. About 950,000 have escaped multidimensional poverty over the same period,” he stated.

Jobs and Poverty: What the Data Suggests

The reported employment gains span various sectors of the economy, though detailed breakdowns were not immediately provided in the address. The decline in multidimensional poverty — which measures deprivation across factors such as education, health, and living standards — suggests broader improvements beyond income alone.

President Mahama described the figures as proof that the country’s recovery efforts are beginning to yield measurable social impact.

“This improvement indicates that our economy is gaining strength and resilience on the global stage. We are moving decisively from planning to action on our flagship 24-hour economy,” he added.

Stronger External Sector Performance

Beyond domestic employment, the President highlighted progress in Ghana’s external accounts. By December 2025, the country’s current account recorded a surplus of $9.1 billion, representing 8.1% of GDP, a sharp rise from 1.8% in 2024.

According to the President, the turnaround was driven by:

•Increased gold exports

•Strong cocoa performance

•Growth in non-traditional exports

•Higher remittance inflows from abroad

He said the improved external balance reflects renewed confidence in Ghana’s economy and stronger foreign exchange earnings.

Linking Growth to Household Impact

While macroeconomic indicators such as current account surpluses and export growth often dominate headlines, the President framed the latest figures around household outcomes — jobs created and poverty reduced.

The administration maintains that sustaining these gains will require continued investment in production, expansion of the 24-hour economy initiative, and policies aimed at maintaining fiscal and monetary stability.

The new data, if sustained in subsequent quarters, could signal a broader shift from economic stabilization to inclusive growth, with tangible effects on livelihoods across the country.
