World Economic Forum CEO Børge Brende Steps Down After Disclosure of Contacts With Jeffrey Epstein

Børge Brende has resigned as President and Chief Executive Officer of the World Economic Forum (WEF) following public disclosure of past interactions with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The announcement was made Thursday, with Forum Co-Chairs Andre Hoffmann and Larry Fink confirming that Alois Zwinggi will assume the role of interim president and CEO while a permanent successor is sought.

Decision Follows Independent Review

Brende, who has led the Geneva-based organization since 2017, said his decision came after the United States Department of Justice disclosed that he had attended three business dinners with Epstein and exchanged emails and text messages with him.

In his resignation statement, Brende described his eight-and-a-half-year tenure as “profoundly rewarding,” adding that he believed it was the right time for the Forum to continue its work “without distractions.” He did not directly reference Epstein in his remarks.

Earlier this month, the WEF’s Governing Board directed its Audit and Risk Committee to initiate an independent review into Brende’s past contacts with Epstein. The investigation was conducted by outside legal counsel.

According to the co-chairs, the review has now concluded and found no additional concerns beyond what had already been disclosed publicly.

Leadership Transition Underway

The Board of Trustees will oversee the transition process, including the search for a permanent CEO. In the interim, Alois Zwinggi—who has previously held senior roles within the Forum—will manage day-to-day operations.

The World Economic Forum said the decision to launch an external review reflected its commitment to transparency and institutional integrity. The organization, best known for its annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, brings together political leaders, business executives, and civil society figures to address global economic and social challenges.

Brende’s departure marks a significant leadership change for the Forum at a time when global institutions are facing heightened scrutiny over governance and accountability.
