The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of Nigeria, Kayode Egbetokun, has resigned, with multiple local media reports saying he was forced to step down by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Egbetokun is said to have met with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday evening, February 23, 2026, where he was reportedly told by the President to resign.
He went on to tender in his resignation letter on Tuesday morning, February 24, 2026.
The Presidency has since confirmed his resignation.
However, the Presidency said the IGP resigned based on family issues that require his undivided attention.
Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, told the media that “The IGP resigned in a letter today, citing family issues which require his undivided attention.”
