Authorities in Katsina State have arrested three men in Dandume Local Government Area following complaints from residents who accused them of using alleged witchcraft practices to deceive and extort money from people.
The suspects were taken into custody on February 8, 2026, during an operation at Dandume market, a busy commercial hub in the area. According to local Hisbah officials, the arrests came after multiple reports from community members who claimed the men were engaging in suspicious activities linked to so-called supernatural claims.
In a statement, the Dandume Hisbah Board spokesperson, Abdul Baki Mustapha Dandume, said residents alleged that the suspects used witchcraft-related tricks and manipulative tactics to convince victims to part with their money, often by exploiting fear, belief, or desperation.

“The arrests followed complaints from members of the public who felt deceived and financially exploited,” the statement said.
Investigation Ongoing
The Hisbah Board confirmed that investigations are still underway to establish the full details of the case and determine whether the suspects committed offenses under existing laws. Officials said appropriate legal steps would be taken once investigations are concluded.
The board also used the opportunity to caution the public against engaging in fraudulent practices disguised as spiritual or mystical activities, stressing that such acts undermine trust and social harmony.
Call for Vigilance
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious behavior to authorities rather than taking matters into their own hands. Hisbah officials emphasized that community cooperation is essential in preventing exploitation, especially in rural and market settings where vulnerable individuals may be targeted.
The arrests have drawn mixed reactions in Dandume, with some residents welcoming the intervention as necessary to curb alleged scams, while others called for a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure fairness.
Authorities say further updates will be provided as the case develops.
