SOUTH AFRICA: Two Children Dead, Five Hospitalized in Eastern Cape Suspected Food Poisoning

The Eastern Cape Department of Health has confirmed a tragic incident in which two children lost their lives and five others were hospitalized following suspected food poisoning. The victims, aged between four and seven years, were admitted to Cecilia Makiwane Hospital on Saturday, February 7, 2026.

Incident Details and Symptoms

The affected children include six residents from Msintsi Location near Berlin and one child from NU3 Mdantsane. According to health officials, the children presented with severe symptoms, including:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Dizziness

Despite immediate resuscitation efforts by clinical teams, two of the children were declared deceased upon arrival at the hospital.

Current Medical Status of Survivors

Five children remain under medical supervision with varying levels of stability:

  • Critical Care: One child has been intubated and transferred to Frere Hospital for advanced critical care.
  • Stable: The remaining four children are reported to be in stable condition and continue to receive treatment and observation at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital.

Early reports from the families indicate that the six children from Msintsi had been playing together and consumed snacks shortly before falling ill. The Department noted that the specific circumstances surrounding the seventh child from NU3 Mdantsane are still being investigated to determine a potential link.
