Senegal defeated hosts Morocco to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), claiming the second continental title in the history of the Teranga Lions.
Papa Gueye scored the decisive goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time (94th minute), sealing a dramatic victory for the West Africans.
The final was marred by controversy after Morocco were awarded a late penalty at the end of normal time. The decision sparked fury among the Senegalese players, who were briefly instructed by their coach to leave the pitch, causing a temporary interruption to the match.
After heated protests and Senegal’s eventual return to the field, Morocco’s Brahim Diaz stepped up to take the penalty in the dying seconds. However, his poorly executed effort was saved comfortably by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, forcing the match into extra time.
Senegal capitalised in extra time, with Gueye’s strike proving enough to secure the title and break Moroccan hearts.
The defeat was a crushing blow for Morocco, who were hoping to win their first AFCON crown in 50 years on home soil.
Senegal reclaim the title from Côte d’Ivoire, who last lifted the trophy when they hosted the tournament.
