The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially suspended Samuel Eto’o, the President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), following a series of disciplinary infractions during the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The decision was communicated in a formal statement by CAF, outlining a four-match ban and a significant financial penalty for the legendary former striker.
The Incident: Morocco vs. Cameroon
The sanctions stem from Eto’o’s behavior during Cameroon’s 2-0 defeat to the host nation, Morocco, in the knockout stages.
- The Gesture: Eto’o was reportedly observed making an aggressive “angry gesture” directed toward refereeing decisions.
- High-Level Presence: The incident was made more significant by the fact that it occurred in the immediate presence of CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
- Squad Tension: The match was further marred by players from both teams jostling each other, prompting CAF to launch broader investigations into “violent confrontations” occurring during tournament fixtures.
Financial Sanctions and FECAFOOT’s Rebuttal
In addition to the touchline ban, CAF’s disciplinary board imposed a $20,000 fine on Eto’o. FECAFOOT has reacted with sharp criticism of the ruling, describing the decision as one that “lacks any explicit justification.”
In a statement released on Thursday, January 15, 2026, the Cameroonian federation announced its intent to appeal the verdict.
“The expedited procedure leading to this decision raises serious concerns regarding the fundamental requirements of a fair process,” FECAFOOT stated. The federation reaffirmed its “total support” for its president and its commitment to “credible disciplinary justice.”
Tournament Outlook
While Cameroon deals with the fallout of the suspension, the tournament moves toward its conclusion.
- The Final: Host nation Morocco is set to face Senegal in the AFCON 2025 final this coming Sunday.
- Legacy: For Eto’o, the ban represents another controversial chapter in his tenure as head of Cameroonian football, which has been defined by both ambitious reforms and high-profile disputes with coaching staff and international bodies.
The outcome of the appeal is expected to be determined before the next window of international competitive fixtures.
