NIGERIA: Islamic Cleric Sheikh Gumi Claims Life in Danger Following Alleged ‘Boko Haram’ Branding

Renowned Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has raised an alarm over an alleged threat to his life, claiming that he has been “marked for elimination” after being branded a Boko Haram figure during a high-level national security discussion.

The cleric made these allegations while addressing worshippers in a video that has since circulated widely across social media platforms.

The Warning Call from Abuja

Gumi revealed that the warning was discreetly passed to him through an early morning phone call from individuals he described as security contacts in Abuja. According to Gumi, his name was specifically mentioned during a national security meeting in a context that suggests grave consequences.

“They called me from Abuja and told me there was a security meeting. They said I have been marked, that I will be eliminated. And who are Boko Haram?” Gumi questioned during his address.

Challenging the Terrorism Narrative

The cleric used the platform to challenge prevailing narratives surrounding domestic and international terrorism. He argued that extremist groups are often not isolated local actors but are instead the byproducts of broader global power struggles.

In a provocative statement, Gumi questioned the identity of those labeled as terrorists, suggesting that international powers often play a role in creating the very instability they claim to fight.

“Even Americans said they came to fight terrorists, so who are the terrorists? They are the ones,” he asserted.

Background and Context

Sheikh Gumi has long been a controversial figure in Nigeria’s security landscape, frequently acting as a mediator in negotiations with bandits in the Northwest. While he has maintained that his involvement is a humanitarian effort to secure the release of captives and encourage peace, critics and some security officials have often viewed his proximity to these groups with suspicion.

This latest claim comes at a time of heightened national tension regarding insecurity, kidnappings, and the role of non-state actors in the country’s internal affairs.

As of the time of reporting, the Nigerian Government and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) have not issued an official response to the cleric’s allegations.
