Ghana: Police Nab Suspect With 98 Parcels of Suspected Cannabis in Tamale Operation

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 28-year-old man in the Northern Region in connection with the possession of a large quantity of suspected narcotic drugs following a targeted security operation in Tamale.

The suspect, Mohammed Alhassan, was picked up by the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, at about 12:30 p.m. at Kpalsi, a suburb of Tamale.

How the Arrest Was Made

According to a police press statement, the arrest was triggered by a distress call from the Tamale Task Force, which had intercepted 98 parcels of compressed dried leaves, believed to be cannabis, during an operation in the area.

During the initial operation, a man identified as Hashim was apprehended with the suspected drugs. Police said Hashim, during questioning, claimed that the narcotics belonged to Mohammed Alhassan, leading officers to trace and arrest him shortly afterward.

Investigation Takes New Turn

Hashim was initially released while investigations continued, and the seized exhibits were handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit for further action. However, police later disclosed that fresh intelligence and investigations had revealed that Hashim was not merely a courier but a controller of the narcotic substances.

As a result, Hashim has now been reclassified as a suspect and is currently on the run. Police say efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest him to assist with investigations.

Court Appearance Expected

Mohammed Alhassan remains in police custody and is expected to be arraigned before a court on Monday, December 29, 2025, to face charges of possession of narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

Police Call for Public Support

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to intensifying the fight against drug trafficking and related crimes, particularly in the Northern Region. Authorities urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information to aid crime prevention and enforcement efforts.
