The President of the Dangote Group, Dr. Aliko Dangote, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Kaduna-based businessman Kailani Mohammed, demanding a full retraction of comments described as libellous. Failure to comply will result in a ₦100 billion defamation lawsuit.
The legal warning was delivered via a letter from Dangote’s counsel, Dr. Ogwu James Onoja (SAN) of Onoja Law Firm, Abuja, following remarks made by Mohammed during a recent television interview.
The Allegations
The dispute stems from an interview aired on December 17, 2025, on TrustTV News. During the broadcast, Mohammed reportedly accused Dangote of engaging in “unclean business” during the 1980s in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The legal team representing Africa’s richest man stated that these claims are not only false but are designed to:
- Defame Dr. Dangote’s character.
- Inflict significant harm on his global reputation.
- Cast unfounded doubt on the legitimacy of his wealth.
Legal Demands and Ultimatum
The letter, titled “Demand for public explanation, retraction and unreserved public apology on your libellous publication against Alhaji Aliko Dangote, GCON,” was dated December 20, 2025.
Dangote’s representatives are demanding:
- An immediate and public explanation of the claims.
- A formal retraction of the statement.
- An unreserved public apology.
Mohammed has been given exactly seven days from the receipt of the letter to comply. The letter makes it clear that the ₦100 billion suit will be filed immediately if these conditions are not met within the stipulated timeframe.
Context of the Remarks
The controversial comments reportedly occurred while Mohammed was discussing a petition he had submitted to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) against Dr. Farouk Ahmed.
This legal move marks a decisive effort by the Dangote Group to protect the brand’s integrity amidst heightened public and regulatory scrutiny in the energy and manufacturing sectors.
