Ini Edo Appeals to Regulators to Keep ‘A Very Dirty Christmas’ in Cinemas Amid Controversy

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Ini Edo has issued an emotional public appeal to regulators and the public, pleading against the removal of her latest film, A Very Dirty Christmas, from cinemas.

The appeal follows growing criticism and concerns raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over the film’s title, which some critics believe mocks Christianity.

A Plea for Content Over Title

In a video shared on her Instagram page on Sunday night, Edo stressed that the controversy is centered solely on the film’s title rather than its actual message or content. She urged critics to view the film before passing final judgment.

“Just don’t pull my film, please. Let people watch it first. Watch the film and then decide if it disrespects Christians or Christianity. If it does, I will pull it myself,” she stated.

Edo explained that the title was chosen as a metaphor for family secrets and conflicts coming to light, rather than a jab at the faith. “There is no dirt in the story, and it does not ridicule Christians or dishonour God,” she added.

Financial Stakes and Authority Mandate

The actress highlighted the severe financial implications of pulling the movie, noting that it is currently showing in over 70 cinemas nationwide. The production involved massive investment in marketing, distribution, and overall production costs.

She also confirmed that authorities have intervened, giving her an ultimatum: change the title or risk the film being pulled entirely.

“They’ve asked us to change the title or risk having the film pulled. I will try to change it, but please don’t remove the movie. Christians are not the people I want a problem with, because I am one of them,” Edo said.

Apology to the Public

Reaffirming that there was never any malicious intent to demean the Christian faith, Edo offered a sincere apology to those offended by the branding.

A Very Dirty Christmas was never meant to discredit Christians or Christianity. If it has hurt anyone, I sincerely apologise,” she concluded.

The filmmaker remains in discussions with regulators to finalize a title change that satisfies all parties while allowing the film to continue its run during the lucrative festive season.
