Real Sociedad Sacks Coach Sergio Francisco Amid Relegation Zone Slide

Real Sociedad has dismissed coach Sergio Francisco, effective immediately, with the team sinking to 15th place in the La Liga table, just one point above the relegation zone. The sacking was confirmed on Sunday following a disappointing start to the season.

Francisco, who was promoted from the reserve team Sanse to take the helm at the start of the campaign, managed only four wins in 16 league matches. His fate was sealed on Friday after La Real suffered a crucial 2-1 defeat at home against Girona (18th).

Interim Appointment and Crucial Fixtures

In a statement, Real Sociedad announced the interim leadership structure ahead of the festive break:

“Current Sanse coach Jon Ansotegi will be in charge of leading, provisionally, the team into the two matches they have before the Christmas break,” the club confirmed.

Ansotegi faces two crucial fixtures that will heavily influence the club’s confidence heading into the New Year:

  • Tuesday: An away visit to Eldense in the Copa del Rey.
  • Saturday: A crunch league clash with Levante (20th), which will be vital for avoiding the relegation zone entirely.

The instability marks a rapid decline for the Basque side, which reached the Europa League last 16 and finished in mid-table in the Spanish top flight just last season under former coach Imanol Alguacil.
