A Kano State High Court No. 1 has delivered a critical verdict, sentencing 22-year-old Najibullah Alkasim to death by hanging for the murder of his neighbor, Isyaku Ya’u. The fatal stabbing occurred during a dispute at a celebration party in Dakata Quarters on January 19, 2024.
Conviction Details
Justice Farida Dabappa held that the prosecution successfully proved the charge of culpable homicide beyond reasonable doubt. The court found that Alkasim fatally stabbed the deceased in the chest with a screwdriver during the argument.
Prosecution Counsel Lamido Abba-Sorondinki informed the court that the incident erupted at a party organized to celebrate an election victory.
The prosecution team presented a strong case, supported by:
- Testimonies from four witnesses.
- A medical report and photograph of the victim.
- The weapon used in the attack.
- Alkasim’s alleged confessional statement.
Although Alkasim denied the allegation, and his lawyer, Tasiu Daneji, presented three defense witnesses, the court found the defense evidence insufficient to sway the verdict.
The verdict closes a painful chapter for Ya’u’s family, delivering justice and underscoring the severity of fatal conflicts that erupt over seemingly minor disputes.
