Trump Orders Pentagon to Prepare Options for Nigeria as US Labels Country a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ Over Attacks on Christians

Tension between Washington and Abuja has risen sharply after U.S. President Donald Trump issued a new threat against Nigeria — warning that the United States could suspend aid and take direct action if the Nigerian government fails to halt violent attacks in communities with large Christian populations.

In a video message circulated this week, Trump accused the Nigerian authorities of allowing “killings of Christians” to continue unchecked, and directed U.S. defence officials to prepare possible response options as a precaution.

“If the Nigerian government continues to allow the killings of Christians, the United States will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria,” Trump said in the recording, adding that any military response, if triggered, would be “fast and vicious.”

This message came shortly after Nigeria was recently placed back on a U.S. watch-list of nations flagged for serious concerns on religious freedom — a diplomatic black mark that could trigger sanctions or specific policy restrictions.

U.S. government sources privately confirmed that the White House and Pentagon had been asked to present a range of contingency options. However, defence officials have not released any specifics on timing, legal authority, or potential scope.

Nigeria disputes Trump’s narrative

Nigerian authorities have pushed back strongly, insisting that the country’s armed conflicts are driven by terrorism, criminality, land disputes and banditry — not by government-sanctioned religious targeting.

Officials argue that both Christians and Muslims have been victims of the violence, pointing to ongoing military operations against insurgents in the northeast and bandit networks operating in several northern states.

Senior Nigerian diplomats have also warned that Trump’s rhetoric risks inflaming tensions inside the country and undermining cooperation between both nations, particularly in counter-terrorism and intelligence sharing.

Global concern about escalation

International analysts say the language used could further complicate an already volatile situation. Some human rights groups in the U.S. have urged caution — saying Washington must avoid turning legitimate religious freedom concerns into a trigger for unilateral military threats.

Meanwhile, religious groups in America have been lobbying the Trump administration to intervene more forcefully in Nigeria, arguing that decades of violence against rural Christian communities have not been adequately addressed.

As of now, it remains unclear whether the U.S. will move beyond warnings toward enforcement — or whether diplomatic engagement between both countries will reduce the political temperature in the coming weeks.

For Nigeria, the stakes are high. The U.S. is a major security partner, a trade ally and a leading source of intelligence in the fight against violent extremist groups in West Africa. Any breakdown in that relationship could have far-reaching consequences.
