Angola has officially opened the newly built Uíge Stadium — a modern 10,000-seater sports facility constructed to FIFA, UEFA and CAF standards — as the country accelerates investment in sporting infrastructure to support youth development and strengthen its position in international competition.
The commissioning formed part of Angola’s 50th Independence anniversary calendar and is aligned with government priorities to expand access to quality sports infrastructure beyond the capital regions.
Youth and Sports Minister Rui Falcão Pinto de Andrade, who presided over the ceremony alongside Uíge Governor José Carvalho da Rocha, described the stadium as both a practical investment in athlete development and a strategic tool for social cohesion.
“This is more than an infrastructure,” the minister said. “It is a commitment to building pathways for young Angolans to compete, excel, and represent the nation with pride.”
The Uíge Stadium project was delivered by Mitrelli Group and involved local professionals in architecture, engineering and construction. More than 800 direct and indirect jobs were created during the build — offering skills development opportunities for youths in the region.
Its opening closely follows the recent commissioning of the José Armando Sayovo Olympic and Paralympic Sports Complex in Bengo — a facility fast-tracked and delivered six months ahead of deadline — underscoring Angola’s wider investment priorities as the nation invests in pre-Olympic sports facilities, high-performance training environments, and athlete support systems.
The Uíge facility includes a standard-size 105 x 68 metre natural grass pitch, six-lane athletics track, medical and recovery units, warm-up zones, modern dressing rooms, full disability access, and integrated broadcast studios for multi-platform media coverage.
Additionally, commercial spaces built beneath the spectator stands are intended to stimulate local enterprise, support community events and drive year-round economic activity.
Government officials say the new stadium is expected to host regional competitions, national athletic events, grassroots training programmes and international pre-season camps — providing a long-term platform for youth talent identification and national sports development.
