The Sokoto State Police Command has taken a 25-year-old man, Sufiyanu Aliyu, into custody over the alleged killing of his 15-year-old wife, Suwaiba Abubakar Bawa, following a domestic altercation in Gwanyal Village, Tangaza Local Government Area. The incident reportedly occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on October 27.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, preliminary findings suggest that an argument between the couple escalated, resulting in Aliyu allegedly attacking his wife with a knife. Officers who responded to the distress report said the suspect was arrested at the crime scene, and the knife believed to have been used in the attack was recovered as evidence. The victim was rushed to a nearby medical facility, where a doctor confirmed her dead.
Police say the suspect admitted involvement during initial interrogation.
The Commissioner of Police for Sokoto State has praised the prompt action of officers and assured the public that the case will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted. He also appealed to communities across the state to promptly report signs of domestic violence to prevent further tragedies.
The case highlights ongoing public concern over early and forced marriage involving children in parts of the country, an issue rights groups say continues to expose young girls to heightened risks of domestic abuse and exploitation. The police say further investigative findings will be released to the public as the matter progresses.
