Private legal practitioner and 2024 running mate of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Lawyer Wayoe Ghanamannti, has formally petitioned Parliament to impeach President John Dramani Mahama for what he describes as the President’s failure to address illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
According to Lawyer Ghanamannti, the petition—filed under Article 69 of the 1992 Constitution—seeks to hold the President accountable for breaching his duty to protect the environment. He noted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had pledged before the 2024 general elections to end galamsey, yet the problem persists under its administration.
Speaking on Joy Prime, Ghanamannti alleged that the NDC is complicit in the ongoing environmental degradation, asserting that both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have failed to curb illegal mining despite their repeated promises.
“In the 2024 election, I made it clear that when we come to power, we will revoke all licences and end galamsey. The NDC capitalized on public frustration over the NPP’s handling of the issue, but now that they are in power, the same situation continues,” he said.
He further alleged that “Goldbod” is secretly purchasing gold from illegal miners, adding that, “At the end of the day, both the NDC and NPP cannot stop galamsey, but the CPP will. That is why I have taken this action under Article 69 to seek the President’s impeachment for accountability.”
The petition comes amid mounting public criticism of the government for the continued destruction of Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves by illegal miners. Meanwhile, President Mahama has reiterated that he will not hesitate to declare a state of emergency in mining areas if advised by the National Security Council, though he believes the fight against galamsey can still be won through other measures.
