Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of Nigeria have intercepted several consignments of illicit drugs concealed in frozen snails, electrical bulbs, and female clothing bound for the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
According to a statement released by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, two suspects connected to the attempted exports have been arrested.
One of the suspects, identified as Boladale Riliwan, a cargo agent, was arrested on October 7 at the export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, after officers discovered 15 parcels of skunk — a potent strain of cannabis — hidden inside 10 large rechargeable electric bulbs packaged for shipment to the DRC.
Another suspect, 48-year-old Olawale Oyebola Hakeemot, a UK-based Public Health Assistant, was apprehended on October 12 at Terminal 2 of MMIA while attempting to board a Qatar Airways flight to Manchester, United Kingdom. She was found with frozen snails used to conceal 2,300 pills of Tramadol 225mg in her luggage.
Additionally, NDLEA officers at a courier company in Lagos intercepted a separate shipment containing 810 pills of bromazepam hidden in female clothing destined for the United States on October 16.
In a related operation in Adamawa State, a suspect identified as Bello Buba was arrested at an NDLEA checkpoint in Namtari, Yola South Local Government Area, with 38,270 pills of Tramadol concealed in the spare tyre, boot, and door panels of his Honda Civic. The drugs were reportedly smuggled from Benin Republic into Nigeria on October 12.
The NDLEA reaffirmed its commitment to curbing drug trafficking through airports, seaports, and land borders across the country.
