President Mahama Calls for Stronger Commitment to Women’s Empowerment for Sustainable Development

President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana on Monday, October 13, 2025, addressed the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, calling for renewed global commitment to women’s empowerment as a key driver of sustainable development.

Highlighting the significance of the gathering, President Mahama said the meeting reaffirms the shared commitments made 30 years ago at the Beijing Conference toward advancing the rights and empowerment of women and girls.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s dedication to gender equality, noting that the country has taken decisive steps to mainstream gender in national development. These include the election of Ghana’s first female Vice President and the appointment of women to key leadership positions in government.

President Mahama also pointed to progress in achieving gender parity in school enrollment, emphasizing the government’s continued support through budget allocations and the strengthening of relevant institutions to sustain social intervention programmes. Among these initiatives, he cited the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme, which provides support to female-headed households.

He further announced plans for the establishment of a Women’s Development Bank, aligning with the African Union’s Decade of Women’s Financial and Economic Inclusion (2020–2030).

President Mahama urged African leaders to build on the gains made in women’s empowerment while addressing persistent challenges. In his capacity as the African Union Champion for Gender and Development Issues, he appealed to his peers to prioritize women’s empowerment and commit to transformative, sustainable actions that promote equality and inclusive growth.

According to a report distributed by the APO Group on behalf of Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the president reiterated that empowering women remains essential to achieving long-term social and economic progress across the continent.
