Riyad Mahrez has announced that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark the end of his international career, following Algeria’s qualification for the tournament after a decisive 3–0 victory over Somalia.
The 34-year-old Al-Ahli winger scored once and provided two assists to secure Algeria’s top spot in Group G and a fifth World Cup appearance. The finals will be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico next year.
“This will be my last World Cup. I’m not Ronaldo at 40,” Mahrez told Algerian media after the match. “I’ll give everything I have to represent Algeria in the best possible way.”
Mahrez, who turns 35 in February, has earned 106 caps and scored 33 goals for the national team since his debut in 2014. Reflecting on the team’s achievement, he credited his teammates, coach, and supporters for their collective effort.
“I thank God for this important win,” he said. “I’m happy to have contributed with two assists, but the most important thing is that we’ve officially qualified. The team dominated from start to finish, and now our focus turns to the Africa Cup of Nations.”
Algeria’s qualification marks their fifth appearance at the World Cup, following campaigns in 1982, 1986, 2010, and 2014. Their best run came in Brazil in 2014, when they reached the round of 16 for the first time before losing to eventual champions Germany in extra time.
