Guinea Unveils First Locomotives in $20 Billion Simandou Rail Project

Guinea has marked a key milestone in its $20 billion Simandou 2040 Program with the arrival of the first four locomotives for the TransGuinean Company (CTG) on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

The initiative, spearheaded by the government, seeks to harness the country’s vast mineral wealth as a foundation for sustainable and inclusive development. The lead locomotive has been named KŌMA after the President’s native village, while the others carry names of villages tied to senior project officials.

These locomotives are the first of an extensive fleet of 143 locomotives and more than 7,000 wagons planned under the project. Central to the program is the development of the world-class Simandou iron ore reserve, which includes the construction of a 650 km railway and a deep-water port. Once operational, the railway is expected to transport 120 million tons of iron ore over two years, while also providing passenger and freight services that will connect Guinea’s four natural regions.

The Simandou 2040 Program also envisions broader economic transformation by creating a sovereign wealth fund and channeling investments into 14 priority sectors, including infrastructure, agriculture, and industry.

With the delivery of these first locomotives, Guinea has taken a decisive step toward positioning itself as a model of sustainable growth and regional integration in West Africa.
