Chad’s Minister of Public Health and Prevention, Dr. Abdelmadjid Abderrahim, on Monday inaugurated the first-ever oxygen production plant in Mongo, marking a milestone for healthcare delivery in the Guéra region.
The facility, established through a partnership between Chad and UNICEF, will provide a steady and reliable supply of medical oxygen, crucial for treating respiratory illnesses, neonatal emergencies, obstetric complications, and surgical cases.
Guéra’s Health Delegate, Dr. Abdoulaye Moustapha Fadoul, described the plant as a lifesaving resource that will have a daily impact on patient care. UNICEF’s Country Representative, Luciano Calestini, reaffirmed the organisation’s long-term commitment to strengthening Chad’s healthcare system in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
Minister Abderrahim underscored the historic significance of the project, noting that it is the first time a region like Guéra has gained such a facility. Beyond Mongo, the plant will also supply oxygen to the neighbouring provinces of Salamat and Batha, thereby modernising medical infrastructure and improving emergency preparedness.
The project reflects the vision of President Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, who has prioritised equitable access to quality healthcare for all citizens. The inauguration was attended by provincial authorities, UNICEF officials, and development partners.
