Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has announced the lifting of the state of emergency in Rivers State, Nigeria.
According to him, With effect from midnight today [Wednesday, September 17, 2025], the State of Emergency in Rivers State is hereby lifted.”
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, the President added that “Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu, and the State House of Assembly will resume their constitutional duties from September 18, 2025.”
It would be recalled that on March 18, 2025, President Tinubu proclaimed a state of emergency in Rivers State.
During his proclamation address at the time, he highlighted the reasons for the declaration.
He recounted that it became necessary to proclaim the state of emergency because there was a total “paralysis of governance in Rivers State, which had led to the Governor of Rivers State and the House of Assembly being unable to work together.”
President Tinubu further stated that at the time of the proclamation, “critical economic assets of the State, including oil pipelines, were being vandalized.”
He says “The State House of Assembly was crisis-ridden, such that members of the House were divided into two groups.”
