LAOIS, IRELAND — Grainne Kealy, a woman who lost her entire forehead in a horrific car crash in 2006, has shared her incredible transformation with the world. Now 41, she has undergone 16 reconstructive surgeries to restore her face.
The accident occurred in December 2006 when her boyfriend’s Jeep, traveling at just 50km/h, hit a wall on a patch of ice. The severity of her injuries was intensified because her feet were on the dashboard. When the airbag deployed, her knees were sent smashing into her face at an estimated 320km/h, breaking every bone.
Ms. Kealy’s injuries were so severe that doctors were forced to surgically remove her forehead. For two years, she lived without a forehead, a period she described as feeling “a little strange.”
In 2009, she received a custom Italian ceramic forehead. Since then, her journey to recovery has been marked by both physical and mental challenges. Despite her progress, she admits she still suffers and “dislikes looking in a mirror.”
A passionate advocate for road safety, Ms. Kealy has become a vocal campaigner against the dangerous practice of placing feet on the dashboard. “It breaks my heart,” she said, when she sees people doing it, urging others not to make the same mistake.
