African leaders and activists attending the second edition of the Africa Climate Summit (ACS-2) have called for a paradigm shift in the financing of global climate initiatives.
According to the leaders and the activists, the world must begin to treat Africa not as a victim of climate change but as a strategic partner for investment.
The ACS-2 is taking place in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. It kicked off on Monday, September 8, 2025, and saw a number of African leaders including Kenya’s President William Ruto, Ethiopian Prime Minister, Dr Abiy Ahmed, and Djibouti President, Ismail Omar Guelleh, planting trees.
Dr. Abiy Ahmed who opened the Summit, made a call to replace “climate aid with climate investment.”
He pointed out that Africa’s resilience and renewable energy potential offer immense opportunities.
African Union Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf observed the need for fairness in addressing the climate crisis.
He says “The vulnerability of our member countries caused by climate change, debt burden and the structural inequalities of the international financial architecture must be redressed through climate justice. We need a genuine cooperation for the implementation of our continent’s adaptation plan by providing financial resources, technology and expertise.”
On his part, Mr. Ruto says
“The truth is undeniable. No nation can solve this crisis alone. Only through bold, united and sustained collaboration can we avert climate catastrophe. Isolation is not a winning strategy, it is courting failure.”
