Uganda: Anita Among Crushes Kadaga in NRM Woman Vice Chairperson’s Race with Landslide Victory

Anita Annet Among

In a stunning political upset at Kololo Airstrip on August 27, 2025, Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among handed former Speaker of Parliament and First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga one of the most humiliating defeats of her long political career.

The contest for the position of NRM Woman National Vice Chairperson for ended in a lopsided tally, with Among securing an overwhelming 1,525 votes against Kadaga’s paltry 65 votes in the standing-behind-candidate polling system.

The results leave little doubt about the shifting power dynamics within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), as Among’s decisive win effectively cements her as the new political powerhouse of Eastern Uganda.

A Savage Polling Outcome

The crowd-style voting system, where delegates physically stood behind their candidate of choice, left no room for doubt about the scale of Kadaga’s rejection. The visual spectacle was both dramatic and brutal, with lines overwhelmingly forming behind Among, while only a thin trail of supporters stood behind Kadaga.

“This was not just a defeat; it was a political annihilation,” one delegate told Uganda Today moments after the announcement.

Kadaga’s Fading Grip

For over 3 decades, Kadaga has been a towering figure in Ugandan politics, rising from a backbench legislator to become Deputy Speaker of Parliament for ten years before ascending to the position of a Speaker for two terms, 10 years before what she termed as “humiliation” of being removed from that position. She was replaced as Speaker by the late Jacob Oulanyah and was named First Deputy Prime Minister. But today’s results exposed the deep cracks in her political base and the waning of her influence within the NRM hierarchy.

Political analysts say the defeat signals the end of Kadaga’s dominance in the Busoga sub-region and perhaps even her role as a national power broker.

Among’s Star Power

Meanwhile, Anita Among’s resounding win underscores her growing clout. As the current Speaker of Parliament, she has cultivated strong ties with the NRM establishment and presented herself as a unifying figure in the region. Her victory today consolidates her authority both in the legislature and within party structures.

“The people have spoken,” Among declared after the results, adding that she intends to use her new mandate to “serve the region with unity, development, and loyalty to the NRM cause.”

What Next for Kadaga?

Observers are already speculating on Kadaga’s next move. Some suggest she may retreat to her ministerial duties, while others believe she might mount a political comeback outside of NRM’s central structures.

But with today’s outcome, the message from the party base is unmistakable: Eastern Uganda has chosen Among.
