Understanding The Concept Of Afro-Journalism

File photo: some African investigative journalists and their Western counterparts

Afro-Journalism, coined and conceptualized by Martin Mutabazi Mugisha of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a media framework that redefines journalism through African epistemologies, ethical principles, and Storytelling traditions.

This framework integrates indigenous African storytelling techniques, multilingual reporting, investigative rigor, and narrative justice to reshape global media discourse.

It is not merely an alternative journalism model but a transformational approach that reclaims Africa’s voice and narrative power.

By moving beyond Western models, Afro-Journalism priotizes contextual truth, moral responsibility, and cultural preservation, aiming to restore dignity and integrity to African storytelling.

Through it’s redefinition of media structures, journalism standards, knowledge systems, and education, Afro-Journalism positions journalism as a tool for truth, liberation, balance, and self-determination, reinforcing Africa’s and its diaspora’s place in global discourse.
