Crystal Palace’s Europa League Participation Hinges on UEFA Ownership Ruling

The stakeholders at Crystal Palace Football Club will have to wait for a few days before they know their fate concerning their participation in the 2025/26 Europa League.

Crystal Palace risk not partaking in the Europa League due to UEFA’s rule against dual ownership of teams that participate in its club competitions. The Eagles booked qualification after winning the FA Cup by defeating Manchester City in the final.

Crystal Palace’s participation is at risk because of UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules, which prevent teams under the same ownership from competing in the same European competition. However, co-owner John Textor, who also co-owns French club Lyon, has agreed to sell his 44% stake in Palace in a bid to help their case.

UEFA has decided to wait until the outcome of Lyon’s appeal before making a decision on Palace’s participation. This follows Lyon’s demotion to Ligue 2 due to the poor management of finances at the club.

It is not known how long Lyon’s appeal will take, with UEFA stating further details will be announced in “due course.” If Palace are granted a spot in the competition, they will enter the group phase, which begins in September 2025.

The draw for the group phase is scheduled for August 29, 2025.
